Initial PSVR2 Impressions
Here are a few initial impressions about my Playstation VR2 (PSVR2) experience. For my background, I previously owned both the original PSVR and a Valve Index:
Hardware
The setup was easy (one cord and an easy setup process). The headset and controllers are lightweight. The headset wasn’t comfortable at first, but I needed to adjust to the closeness of the lens. On first impression, it is a better setup than the Valve Index and equally (if not more) effective.
Official Charger
I bought the official charger for the controllers. It uses magnetic USB-C inserts which is similar to how I eventually setup my Valve Index controllers. Like all Playstation charging stations, it is a bit of a challenge to get the controllers in the right spot to get a charge, but I appreciate having it otherwise.
Games
- Horizon Call of the Mountain: Reminds me of Half-Life: Alyx but within the Horizon universe. I am trying free movement which was a bit disorienting (need my “VR legs” back) but overall smooth and fun. Climbing is a great simple mechanic to keep my engaged.
- Kayak VR: Mirage: Graphics are gorgeous. Seems like a real non-game. My wife laughed at me flapping my arms aggressively.
- Rez HD: I own a Rez tshirt and have bought the game almost a dozen times across multiple platforms. Eye-tracking for aim is cool. Otherwise, it is the same experience (which I love).
- Pistol Whip: Seems fun but a bit dull. I wish I was playing Beat Saber or SUPERHOT instead.
Games Left to Play
Gran Turismo 7, Moss 1&2, Synth Riders, Tetris Effect: Connected, Until You Fall, No Man’s Sky, Townsmen VR, and The Light Brigade
Conclusion
The PSVR2 compares favorably to the Valve Index and is a huge improvement over the original PSVR. The launch lineup is incredible even if I have played many of these games before. I am happy so far and excited to keep playing!

Yay for a blog post! I’ve yet to get into VR anything, but it always sounds like a LOT of fun. Thanks for the review on this!

I’d be tempted by VR by the right games for me like Minecraft or a racing game. For now the cost is prohibitive. Not sure it’s worth it but have never tried any VR.

@jasonmcfadden There isn’t any one platform that I would say is worth it unless you have extra cash or enjoy being an early adopter. Some of the cheaper options are good for more basic gaming, but core gaming experiences are harder to find. It reminds me of early touch gaming. For me, it is worth it, and I think the medium presents some unique challenges and experiences. I also understand that hardware costs are pretty far off for most people.
